History |
1972 |
John Hepker decided he had enough of downtown Johannesburg and bought the abandoned Silver Hills mine. He started mining the silver and landed up with the adjacent eight properties after a buying spree of real estate. |
1975 |
John built the Silver Hills Gemstone shop on the R511. They were known for their English teas and scones. Their Yersey cows had to be milked daily to keep up with the demand for their cream. John put Silver Hills on the map with his minerals. |
1992 |
Irene Hepker was tragically killed at their residence and John decided to sell Silver Hills |
1994 |
Gerdus Brönn bought Silver Hills, what a time!! South Africa was going through transformation. Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected president. We had our vision. A shop of our own. |
1995 |
Nick May of Toprocks came in to handle the gemstone side of Silver Hills. Here Nick started building up his vast experience on rocks. He presently runs his own import export/ manufacturing concern. |
1997 |
Nick decided to go down to Hermanus. Gerdus took over the gemstone side. He was fortunate to have learned from Nick. Silver Hills decided to just specialize in gemstones and minerals and bought up several collections over the next few years. |

2000 |
11 October 2000 Silver Hills burned down to the ground. Lighting struck the thatch roof and within 20 minutes all that was Silver Hills was only ashes.
Fortunately not all our minerals were
destroyed in the devastating fire, they were still waiting to be
unpacked from our storeroom. After the fire we bought the collection
of Francois McCray who has collected for 40 years and decided to sell
for personal reasons. We then relocate to Hartbeespoortdam. A
historical building built in 1945 was bought. We are now trading in
our new gallery. Below is a photo of our shop. Our NEW location gallery opened it's doors on 1 April 2001. It is located in 74 Scott Street, Hartbeespoort, South Africa. |
