Meionite derived its name from the Greek word for "less", referring to its less acute pyramidal form compared with Vesuvianite.

Meionite comes from the mineral group Scapolite.

Meionite forms a series with Marialite.

Mizzonite is an intermediate between Meionite and Marialite.

Meionite mainly occurs in metamorphosed rocks, some pegmatites, ejected volcanic blocks and altered mafic igneous rocks.
